Full grain: the whole story

Full grain leather is the top layer of the hide with the natural surface left intact. Nothing sanded, nothing corrected. The fibers here are the densest in the hide, which makes it the strongest cut, and the intact surface is what develops patina. Small marks and scars from the animal remain visible. In this grade they are a signature, not a defect.

Full grain costs more because flawless hides are rare and because it hides nothing. It is also the only grade that genuinely improves with years of handling.

Top grain: sanded smooth

Top grain starts as the same top layer, then gets sanded and coated to remove marks and even out the color. The result is uniform and initially handsome. The trade is durability: sanding cuts the strongest fibers, and the coating that replaces the natural surface wears rather than ages. A good top grain wallet is a fine object. It simply peaks on day one.

Genuine leather: technically true

Genuine leather is a legal description, not a compliment. It usually means the lower splits of the hide, coated and embossed to look like the real surface. It is leather in the way instant coffee is coffee. Expect stiff feel, plastic sheen, and edges that fray into fuzz within a year or two.

Bonded and PU: the fine print

Bonded leather is shredded leftovers glued to a backing. PU leather is plastic with a leather word nearby. Both appear in wallets priced suspiciously well. Both crack.

How to tell in the wild

• Look closely. Real grain shows irregular pores. Perfectly repeating texture means an embossing plate.
• Smell it. Leather smells rich and slightly sweet. Chemicals smell like a new shower curtain.
• Check the edges. Painted, sealed edges suggest care. Fuzzy edges suggest splits.
• Apply price logic. A full grain wallet at a bargain price is answering a question you should ask twice.
