How to clean a leather wallet without ruining the finish

A wallet lives a harder life than any other leather good you own. It rides in a pocket, absorbs hand oils all day, and touches every surface you set it on. Good news: cleaning it takes ten minutes, and the products you need probably sit in your bathroom already. The trick is knowing what to skip.

What you need

• Two soft cloths. Old cotton shirts work perfectly.
• Lukewarm water, ideally distilled.
• A drop of mild unscented soap. Think gentle hand soap, nothing antibacterial.
• Leather conditioner for afterwards.

The five step routine

1. Empty everything. Cards, coins, receipts, the lot. Open every pocket and let the wallet sit flat.

2. Dry wipe first. Go over the whole surface with a dry cloth to lift dust and grit. Skipping this step means grinding grit into the finish in step three.

3. Damp wipe, not wet. Dip the second cloth in water with a single drop of soap, wring it out until it is barely damp, and wipe the leather in light circles. Never soak leather. Water that soaks in dries the fibers out and leaves marks.

4. Dry naturally. Leave the wallet open at room temperature. No radiators, no hair dryers, no sunny windowsills. Heat is how leather cracks.

5. Condition sparingly. Once fully dry, work a small amount of conditioner in with your fingertips and buff off the excess. Conditioner replaces the oils that washing removes.

What never touches leather

Alcohol, baby wipes, vinegar, nail polish remover, and all purpose sprays. Each one strips oils or bleaches dye. If a stain will not lift with soap and water, stop and accept it for a week or two. Many marks on full grain leather simply blend into the patina.

How often?

A quick wipe every two or three months and conditioning twice a year is plenty for a wallet made from full grain leather, like the Riva Wallet. Better leather does not just last longer. It also forgives more neglect.
