Does wireless charging damage your battery?

The worry is common enough to have become folklore: wireless charging runs hot, heat kills batteries, therefore wireless charging kills batteries. The first two statements are broadly true. The conclusion is more nuanced than that.

What actually degrades a lithium battery

Three things, in rough order of importance.

Heat. Sustained high temperature accelerates the chemical reactions that permanently reduce a cell's capacity. This is the big one, and it is why a phone left on a car dashboard in summer ages faster than one that is not.

Time spent at a high state of charge. A battery held at 100 percent sits under more internal stress than one at 50 percent. Days spent pinned at full are measurably worse than days spent cycling between 30 and 80.

Charge cycles. Real but slow, and much less significant than the first two for a phone that lives three or four years.

Notice that the delivery method - coil or cable - does not appear on that list. It matters only through its effect on heat.

Where wireless charging does generate heat

Inductive transfer is less efficient than a cable, and the lost energy becomes warmth in the phone and the pad. A well-designed pad with good alignment loses relatively little. A poorly aligned phone on a cheap pad loses a lot, and it shows up as a warm back panel.

So the honest version is: wireless charging is not inherently harmful, but bad wireless charging is warmer than cable charging, and warmth is the thing that matters. Fixing alignment fixes most of it, which is exactly what magnetic pads were designed to do - see Qi2 explained.

The overnight question

Charging overnight used to be the genuine concern, because a phone would hit 100 percent at 1am and then sit there for six hours. Modern phones no longer do that. Optimised Battery Charging on iOS and adaptive charging on Android learn your alarm, hold the battery around 80 percent for most of the night, and finish shortly before you wake.

That single feature removed most of the argument against overnight charging, and it works identically on a pad and on a cable. Leave it enabled.

Five practical rules

Keep the pad out of direct sunlight and off soft surfaces like beds and sofas, which trap heat under the phone.

Take thick cases off if the back gets noticeably hot, and never leave a card or coin between the phone and the pad - see charging through a case.

Do not charge wirelessly while running something heavy like navigation, which heats the phone from both directions at once.

Use a proper power adapter. Underpowered supplies cause slow, warm, inefficient charging, one of the seven causes listed in why is my phone charging slowly.

Top up during the day rather than running to empty and back. Shallow cycles are gentler than deep ones, and this is the natural pattern a pad on the desk encourages, since you set the phone down between tasks without thinking about it.

The short answer

Wireless charging done sensibly is not going to be the reason your battery ages. A hot phone in a hot place, held at 100 percent for years, is. Manage the heat and the method barely matters.
