Why is my phone charging slowly on a wireless charger? Seven fixes

You put the phone down at 11pm, pick it up at 7am, and it is at 64 percent. Wireless charging has a reputation for being slow, and some of that is physics, but most real-world slowness comes from one of a short list of fixable causes. Here they are in the order that finds the problem fastest.

1. The power supply, not the pad

This is the answer more often than everything else combined. A wireless pad can only deliver what is fed into it, and a lot of pads are plugged into whatever old adapter was in the drawer. A 5W phone adapter from a decade ago physically cannot support a 15W pad.

Check the adapter's output rating, printed in small text on its body. If it does not support the wattage and protocol your pad expects - usually USB-C Power Delivery - the pad quietly falls back to its slowest mode and never tells you.

2. Alignment

Wireless charging is inductive: a coil in the pad and a coil in the phone have to overlap. Move the phone fifteen millimetres off centre and efficiency drops sharply. Move it thirty and it may stop entirely, or worse, charge at a trickle while generating heat.

3. Heat

Every phone throttles charging when the battery gets warm, because heat is what actually degrades lithium cells. Wireless charging generates more waste heat than a cable does, so it hits that threshold sooner.

Common causes: the pad sitting in direct sunlight, the phone charging on a soft surface that traps heat, a thick case acting as insulation, or charging while running navigation. Move the pad off the windowsill and out of the bed, and speeds often recover completely.

4. The case, or what is in it

Thickness is the obvious factor - most pads handle up to about 3mm and struggle beyond it. The bigger problem is contents. A card or a coin between phone and pad blocks the field and heats up. Details in charging through a case, card or wallet.

5. The cable

Not all USB-C cables are equal. Charge-only cables and thin cables intended for data can bottleneck power delivery. If everything else checks out, swap the cable before you replace the pad - it is the cheapest test on this list.

6. Background activity

A phone downloading a large update, running location services or backing up photos is drawing power while charging. Net gain drops accordingly, and at a low wireless wattage a busy phone can genuinely approach break-even.

7. Deliberate slow charging

Both iOS and Android now include optimised or adaptive charging, which intentionally holds the battery around 80 percent overnight and completes the charge before your usual alarm. If your phone is at 80 percent at 3am and 100 percent at 7am, nothing is broken - that is the feature working, and it is good for the battery. The realistic expectation

Wireless is not the fast lane and is not trying to be. Its advantage is that setting a phone down is frictionless, so it charges in every small gap in the day rather than in one long session.
